Scottish Poetry Library Readers' Quarterly

From Kyoto to Carbeth

Here's a glimpse of our summer exhibition opening at the beginning of August, carrying you from Scotland to the hillsides of Japan. Finally summer's stretching before you, whether you want to join us to hear Andrew O'Hagan's favourite poems, or write renga in a secret garden...

From Kyoto to Carbeth: poems & plants from the hills

If you've been at the Collins Gallery in Glasgow, or Hill House, Helensburgh, or Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries, you might have seen this beautiful partnership: Gerry Loose's poems with the ikebana of Takaya Fujii, calligraphy by Seigan Urai mounted on luminous silk scrolls and the ceramic vases of Mikako Kawai. If not - and it's at Gracefield till 26 June - come and see it here at the Scottish Poetry Library in August.

If you missed Jackie Kay's fantastic evening of Selected Works in April, you can read her comments on choosing her favourite poems, and see the list she picked in Favourite Poems. You can also see poet and translator Michael Hofmann's selection of German poems and his wonderful introduction - all available in English translations in the Faber Book of Twentieth-Century German Poems.

The Scottish Poetry Library children's section?

children's areaDid you know about the children's section in the SPL? It's on the mezzanine level, and buggies and buggy occupants and parents easily fit in the lift. Unless, of course, small parties wish to climb the stairs themselves, counting as they go - that's fine by us, too.

Once upstairs, there's plenty of daylight from the big windows, a nice soft rug for very young readers to roll about on (it's pretty comfy for those of us over six, as well) and some boxes of toys to entertain anyone not in the mood for a long read. But most importantly there are picture books of poems, from Soapy Baby to the modern classics like Room on the Broom, or King o the Midden, or The Gruffalo [note from experienced library colleagues - should all copies of The Gruffalo be out on loan, break the news gently and prepare for tears.]

Older readers can explore anthologies themed on anything from teenagers' concerns to dinosaurs to ecology, from Scotland or from far further afield. And if your own inner child is awoken by some of the poems on offer, you can dip into childhood with books like Doh Ray Me When Ah Wis Wee, a great new study of evolving children's rhymes by Ewan McVicar.
