Scottish Poetry Library Readers' Quarterly
Spring has nearly sprung! Time to pull on your waterproofs and make a dash for the library. Or if you can't visit us in person now, you can start springcleaning your poetry wishlist right here, by exploring our pick of new books, reserving items online, or booking tickets for readings in April and May...
Have you seen… ?
the New Library of Alexandria
…and the Scottish books that are now in its collections, after a visit by SPL's Director Robyn Marsack? Furthermore, she and novelist and poet James Robertson explored the library, the pyramids and (rather bravely, we think) a camel ride during their journey, arranged by Literature Across Frontiers.

SPL
News
Gerry Loose's poetic collaboration with Japanese colleagues comes to fruition in From Kyoto to Carbeth: plants and poems of the hills. This magical exhibition of ikebana, poetry, ceramics and calligraphy runs to 5 April at the Collins Gallery in Glasgow, 14 April - 18 May at The Hill House, Helensburgh, 24 May - 26 June at Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries, before arriving at the SPL from 1 August to 12 September with accompanying events and workshops.
Look out for online opportunities in April... when Poet Partner for Shetland, Jen Hadfield, will host a reading/writing session. Participants are invited to post a poetic response to any poem from the site's Best Scottish Poems pages, along with a brief discussion of how they have chosen to interpret and answer their chosen work. Visitors and participants are encouraged to post feedback, appreciation and questions.

Our notice boards! Everyone gathers here to get the news. Outside the SPL we put a thematic, lovingly handmade poster of poems. Rumour has it that this inspires people to come into the library...
And once in the building you will find scores of fliers and posters beseeching you to look at them. There is a section dedicated to ‘Library News' – we use this section to keep you abreast of current library events: ‘Everything happening in the SPL' gives a round-up of what's on in the building in any given month and you'll find posters advertising our own events in more detail. Further along are notices for poetry competitions, workshops, performance poetry events, courses, submissions appeals and more - with spare copies for you to pick up.
If you'd like to advertise your poetry events in Scotland, either
on the notice board or on the website, then drop us an email at reception@spl.org.uk by
week 4 of the month before your event, or simply stop by in
good time and let us know what's afoot.

in Ullapool
One of the longest-established SPL outreach collections lives in the reception of the Ceilidh Place in Ullapool - moments away from this breathtakingly lovely view of Loch Broom.
And the Ceilidh Place, along with its SPL poetry shelves, its outstanding bookshop and its unique atmosphere, is part of the Ullapool Book Festival, running from 16-18 May - with plenty of poetry readings, and an evening session for you to bring your favourite poems to share. Raid your own bookshelves, or pick from the SPL collection. We'll see you in the bar on Saturday night...
