Scottish Poetry Library Readers' Quarterly

Peggy Hughes and Lorna Irvine

Check your festive priorities before it all kicks off. 1) have you borrowed enough poetry books to tide you over? And 2) do the fairylights still work? Our new acquisition, Communications Officer Peggy Hughes, cleverly does both at once with the help of our Education Officer Lorna Irvine.

It's hard to resist simply browsing this book's anthology sections for the rhymes you remember. But you'll quickly be drawn into the Ewan McVicar's fascinating studies of constant changes and additions, the origins of songs you've never thought about, the songs your children are now singing (are you sure you want to know?), the old and new tunes…

Barcelona Amor FinalBarcelona Amor Final

Just one of the new books on our shelves, this extraordinary book is pretty far removed from Scottish playgrounds: Barcelona as you have never seen it, the rivetingly personal account of this city by a major living poet. In Catalan, followed by a Spanish version with an English translation by Anna Crowe, the lyric and prose poems are interspersed with haunting black and white photographs.
